How long will I be waiting at the London Passport Office?

I have to apply for a new passport, as I have lost my previous one. I have made an appointment this coming Friday in London. My question is, how long will I be at the office for? I've heard stories of an 8 hour wait - is this realistic?.......

1. Expect to wait ALL day and I do mean ALL day.
2. Wouldn't it save time to apply by post?
3. Yeh you should have applied via check and send at local post offices. It costs £82 but my passport was renewed and delivered by courier within 8 days!
