How to get exact status of passport application.?

How to get exact status of passport application.? I have applied for passport. Police enquiry & all those stuffs are completed. Before 60 days I observed online status is "Your application is not avalable/incorrect application number".

1. They are seriously backed up right now, I wouldn't even screw with them about it. If you make them pull your application to find your status, it may just slow it down further.
2. You must have recieved a small printed reciept from them when u submitted ur application for to the pass port office..... check at the back u'll find a help line number.... on that reciept u'll also find the reference number which u will have to quote during the conversation with them... hope this helps u... n by the way this is for mumbai india..
3. You did not say for what country. If it is for a US passport you can go to the State Department web site and you can get the status. The backlog for US passports has been caught up. You can now receive one in about 4 to 6 weeks.
4. please go to the passport office immediately with the receipt u have with u and make enquiries in person. Their enquiry system on the nest is mostly useless.
5. The best way of going about it is: goto that website, you should have a reference number for your application. http://passport.nic.in/ Select the passport office that you applied at enter the reference number, it should show you the status. Good Luck
